I tried a short Onion style article: "Sign points to expanded hours for area business... or does it?"

APPLETON- Area residents have been left wondering lately what the business hours actually are for the Computer Repair Center in Appleton. While the company claims that it's normal business hours are 10:00am - 6:00pm Monday through Fridays, some local residents feel that the business at 2423 N Richmond St may have recently expanded their hours.

"I'll drive by there sometimes at 8-9 o'clock at night" said local resident Janice Shew. "The lights will be off and there won't be any cars around the building, but that bright 'Open' sign will just be a flashing away. Sometimes, I'll even see the sign on before 7 in the morning when I'm on my way to work."

The sign, which appears to be a 13"x23" sign, with neon letters that flash intermittently and spell the word "Open", has created something of a controversy, with some believing that the sign is occasionally left on by employees when they finish the work day and that no one is actually at the business after hours.

"There's nobody there. They just forget to turn the sign off when they go home for the night. That's it." theorized Brett Shaw of Grand Chute, "I sure am glad I'm not paying their electric bill with them doing things like leaving a neon sign on all night."

A call to the business (placed at 8:30pm Monday via cell phone in the parking lot while the neon sign was illuminated) was not answered and a message not immediately returned. Still, some residents believe a store's sign means something greater.

"If their open sign is in the window, they must be open." said Bernard Seymour of Appleton. "When a store is closed, do they put a sign that says "Open" in the window? Of course not. They might do that kind of silly stuff in Iraq or Afghanistan, but here in the U.S.? No sir."

Similar instances of open signs being illuminated while the businesses appear to be closed have been reported at the Cash Store at 1218 N Badger Ave in Appleton and Little Luigi's Pizza at 102 W Wisconsin Ave in Kaukauna.
